November 1, 2011 marks the 16th anniversary of the founding of Hats & Mittens! While some of the players have changed and the location of the winter ball has moved about throughout the years, the intent & heart-felt mission remains the same. Hats & Mittens is about warmth—warmth for heads and hands, warmth in friendships of the people who gather each year on December 30 to celebrate, warmth in the community for the children we care for by the growing number of volunteers who come along with us every year. We live in a very generous community!
This year we lift up, celebrate and honor the work of The Children’s Grief Connection. This amazing organization was formed in 2002 when funeral home directors noticed that often children were lost in the grieving process. Out of their concern grew The Children’s Grief Connection, a non-profit dedicated to helping children, teens, and families heal from the death of a loved one. Hearts of Hope camps are held throughout the year state-wide bringing children together of all ages to learn how to cope with their loss and understand their grief with others in similar circumstances. Please check out their web site www.childrensgriefconnection.com.
40,000 is the magic number this year! We need that many warm hats & mittens to help kids and young adults in our community warm this winter. Will you help? Can you organize your office, neighborhood, Book Club, church, service organization to collect warm hats & mittens for us? How about inviting your holiday guests to bring a warm set of hats & mittens to your party to celebrate the season? Every piece of warmth helps! The Greater Twin Cities United Way has been so helpful in identifying and connecting us to organizations working with families in the metro area that need our help. Please partner with us to keep kids warm!
Coming soon. . . . a new website! Check it out. Help us spread the word, get involved! We promise you warmth. . . . Cheers! Rebecca

December 11th marked one of the largest snow storms in MN history, it also was the day families were scheduled to pick up their gifts at Catholic Charities Sponsor a Family program. Families came in throughout the day, in spite of the snow, because these gifts were not only their Christmas for the year but also would provide many of the basic necessities of life. Many families came in without gloves or hats, children in tow.
Thanks to Hats & Mittens of MN, each family ventured back into the extreme Minnesota weather protected from the elements, and warmed with the knowledge and hope that people cared.

Organizations serving children in our community have placed orders for over 25,000 hats & mittens so far this season. We have filled some of the orders but still need 17,500 sets to fill the need.
Please consider making a financial contribution on-line for hats & mittens OR organize your work group, book club, dinner group, family and neighborhood to collect warm hats & mittens. We can deliver boxes with labels and fact sheets to your home or office and will provide pick-up services at the completion of your “drive.”
Thanks to the many new groups who are collecting for us this year! Special thanks to Target, HealthPartners, Logistics Planning Services employee groups for collecting. Special thanks to local chiropractors, Girl Scout troops, high school hockey teams, Calvary Lutheran in Edina, and the Horgan family for collecting. Special thanks to senior centers who are knitting for Hats & Mittens! Thanks for helping to keep kids warm.

The 15th Annual Hats & Mittens Winter Ball brings us back to the original venue – The Lafayette Club – Wayzata, MN. The fifteen year marks the distribution of over 350,000 hat and mitten sets, plus monetary awards of over $250,000. With gratitude to our loyal attendees and generous donors we have made a difference for children in the local community, and we’ve had fun doing it. In addition to supplying hat and mitten sets to community resource centers, monetary proceeds for this year’s event will be given to West 7th Community Center – a local program serving families in the West 7th Street, St. Paul community.
